Works shown in this blog are images that have been set from briefs on my current Art Foundation and also recent personal work. I like to photograph events that happen every day around me, whether that is young people on a night out or the small things I see walking to the bus stop. For me, photography is a way of documenting life but it is also a chance for me to communicate my opinions. In ‘Friday Nights’ I wanted to capture something that I am very familiar with, working through the week counting down the days until Friday night where the majority of people will head into their city centers eager to drink the town dry. It was important to me that I captured the essence of binge drinkers. I also engage in fashion photography as I feel it gives me more opportunity to experiment and be creative and the images are often rewarding, in ‘Portia’ I wanted to create an old-fashioned feel to the images which was aided by the hair, make up and styling. However, I would not deem this area of photography to be what I relish in most. In ‘Skins’ I explored the subculture of the 1980s and how their identity has become prominent in Britain even in modern culture. Furthermore, I enjoy the problem solving that comes to working within a brief but also like the freedom of personal work which is why I always carry a camera with me at all times. Coming from the Manchester area myself I appreciate the buzz and aura that the city has and I am constantly trying to capture the personality the city center has – from high rise flats, Coronation Street nostalgia and the avid music scene. I am interested in the course at Manchester because I feel it is an inspirational city and learning on a practice-based course only would further my learning in photography and develop my creativeness.
